Inhabitants: the Benahoaritas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Before the arrival of Europeans, the island was called Benahoare, meaning &#8220;my land&#8221;.<\/strong> Its inhabitants, the Benahoaritas or Awaras, lived in caves and survived on goats, sheep, pigs, roots, and wild fruits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their staple food was <a href=\"https:\/\/lapalmaisland.com\/en\/gofio-museum-las-tricias\/#whatisgofio\">gofio<\/a>, a flour made from roasted cereals and roots, which is still part of Canarian cuisine today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is believed they came from Northwest Africa, though it is unclear whether they arrived voluntarily or were expelled by invaders such as the Phoenicians or sailor Lancelotto Malocello reached La Palma with the first Europeans, but <strong>the island was not conquered until 1492.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li landed in Tazacorte<\/a>, and one year later Alonso Fern\u00e1ndez de Lugo completed the conquest<\/strong>, renaming the island San Miguel de La Palma.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li
