Every year, the west coast of La Palma fills once again with music, water and joy during one of the island’s most eagerly awaited summer events: the Fiesta de La Morena. On 15 August, Tazacorte Beach becomes a great festive stage where tradition and fun come together by the sea.
The origins of this celebration date back to the 16th century, when the women of the municipality would gather on the beach to sell or exchange the fish their husbands brought back from the sea. Over time, that popular custom has evolved into a modern, much-loved and crowded celebration, bringing together local residents, visitors from across the island and people from other parts of the Canary Islands.
The celebration begins at midday and continues into the night, with a summer atmosphere where flip-flops, swimwear and the desire to have fun are essential. One of the most anticipated moments is the popular Baile de La Morena, which takes place on the sand. Hundreds of people gather around and follow two large giant moray figures as they move through the crowd to the rhythm of the music.
The beach comes alive with a mix of dancing, concerts, DJs and plenty of water. Participants cool off with jets, hoses and buckets of water, turning the beach into a true aquatic party. Out at sea, inflatable boats complete the scene, allowing people to enjoy the celebration both from the shore and from the water.
This year, the music will be provided by Grupo Libertad, Naty Caru, Andrea RodrÃguez, Grupo Bienmesabe and El Vega Life, bringing rhythm to one of the most fun and refreshing celebrations in La Palma’s festive calendar.
