Why You Should Hike the Crest Route
This is one of those experiences that stays with you forever.
Walking between sky and earth, surrounded by stunning views of Caldera de Taburiente, Cumbre Vieja, and, on clear days, even Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro.
It’s a demanding route, but every step rewards you with unique landscapes, natural wonders like the sea of clouds, and that indescribable feeling of standing on top of the world.

Section: Roque de los Muchachos – Pico de la Nieve
The adventure begins at the Roque de los Muchachos car park, at 2,423 metres above sea level, surrounded by telescopes and observatories that look straight out of another planet.
From here, the path descends along the rim of the Caldera, with breathtaking views deep into its interior.
Soon, you’ll reach the Pared de Roberto and the Mirador de Los Andenes, overlooking the Barranco de las Angustias and the GarafÃa Pine Forest Reserve.
The route continues past Morro Negro and Pico de la Cruz, marked by its geodetic point and a wooden cross perched at the very edge of the abyss.
Finally, after about 11 kilometres of ups and downs along the ridge, you’ll reach Pico de la Nieve, at 2,230 metres.
From here, the views are spectacular, towards the south, over Cumbre Vieja, and across the Caldera and slopes descending to Santa Cruz de La Palma.

Flora and Landscapes
Throughout the hike, vegetation changes with altitude.
At higher levels, hardy shrubs like codeso, retamón, and endemic flowers dominate.
As you descend toward Pico de la Nieve, Canary pine forests appear.
In spring and early summer, the blooming season turns the ridge into a true spectacle of colours.

A Shorter and Calmer Alternative
If you prefer a lighter excursion, there’s a wonderful 5 km (round trip) variant.
It starts from the car park beside the LP-4 road, just before reaching Roque de los Muchachos.
This version climbs gently to Pico de la Nieve, following the trail in the reverse direction.
You’ll walk among pine trees, native shrubs and enjoy coastal views without the effort of covering the full ridge.
On clear days, you can even see Santa Cruz de La Palma and the nearby islands.
It’s perfect for those with limited time or who prefer a more relaxed hike.

Practical Tips to Enjoy the Trail
- Gear up properly: wear mountain clothing and sturdy shoes, bring water, snacks, sunscreen and a cap.
- Dress warmly: the peaks can be cold, even when it’s hot on the coast, and weather can change quickly.
- Check the forecast: avoid days with fog or strong wind, which make the trail harder.
- Respect nature: don’t pick flowers or disturb native vegetation.
- Keep your phone charged: bring a map or hiking app as a backup.
