In September 2021, the island of La Palma witnessed the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano, an event that marked the recent history of Cumbre Vieja and led to the formation of this new volcano, transforming the island’s landscape and deeply affecting local communities.
Details of the volcano excursion La Palma
Opcion 1. Guided Volcano Hike Only
In this new tour, you’ll have the chance to approach the crater to within just 1 meter. The route follows a one-way path leading to the southern crater of Tajogaite, continuing onwards to the neighborhood of Las Manchas. After exploring the area, we will take you back to El Paso, driving along the emergency road that crosses the newly formed lava rivers from south to north.
The hike begins with a 3-hour route to the impressive volcanic cone, covering a total distance of 6,5 km with medium to low difficulty. The hike to the Tajogaite volcano starts from Llano del Jable. You’ll walk through ash and lapilli, observe the volcano’s effects on the vegetation, and witness the remarkable regenerative ability of the Canary Island pine.
Discover the formation of the new volcano with experienced guides. The guided tour allows you to experience the birth of the volcano after the collapse of the magma chambers up close. Option 2: La Palma Volcano Hike – Full-Day Tour with Transfer
During the excursion, after the hike to Tajogaite, you will also visit Puerto de Tazacorte, from where you can observe the new extension of the island, formed by the meeting of the lava with the sea, known as the lava delta. In the district of La Laguna, an area clearly affected by the volcano’s lava flows, a road has been built to connect the villages of the Aridane Valley.
Afterwards, you will stop at Plaza de Tajuya, which during the volcanic eruption became an improvised and privileged viewpoint of this impressive phenomenon. You will also visit Tacande, one of the neighborhoods closest to the birthplace of the volcano. The view of the volcanic cone and the vast expanse of lava flows, stretching to the west coast of La Palma, will leave you amazed.
