The municipality of Brena Baja, located in the southeast of La Palma island, is known for its charm and uniqueness, despite being one of the smallest on the island. With a population of 5,885, it’s primarily made up of the towns of San Jose and San Antonio, the most populated areas of the municipality.

Its name, “Las Breñas”, define its landscape. The name means “rocky terrain and wild vegetation cover” and it’s refers to the volcanic nature of the terrain and its vegetation. It borders the municipalities of Breña Alta and Mazo and is nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains.
In Breña Baja, you’ll find the Viewpoint La Brena, easily recognizable from afar by its large metal cross. This viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the Las Brenas Valley and the municipality of Mazo. Just below the viewpoint, there is a recreational area surrounded by pine trees, perfect for spending time in contact with nature. The whole area is lush and green, making it an ideal spot to relax and enjoy the peace of the surroundings.
At the highest point of the Breña Baja municipality, outside the populated areas, there is also the Viewpoint de Las Ventas at 1300m, one of the best places to stargaze in the eastern part of La Palma.This natural area, offer a serene environment, perfect for hiking and exploration enthusiasts.
Regarding Breña Baja’s coast, one of the island’s main tourist destinations is found: the beach of Los Cancajos. Awarded the Blue Flag, this beach boasts black volcanic sand and clear waters. It’s also a renowned spot for diving, given its rich marine biodiversity.

- Los Cancajos, La Palma. The most significant tourist town in the eastern part of the island. Los Cancajos beach, a beautiful family-friendly black sand beach.
- La Breña Viewpoint. Perched atop La Breña mountain, it offers stunning panoramic views of the valley and parts of the Mazo municipality. Next to the viewpoint lies a pine forest featuring a lovely recreational area.
- San Jose Church. An ancient church located in San Jose town. It serves as a significant landmark in Breña Baja. Its architecture is notable, and inside, it houses a rich religious history and heritage.
- Trails and Paths of Breña Baja La Palma. Breña Baja boasts a network of trails and paths that allow you to immerse yourself in the municipality’s nature and landscapes. From coastal routes to mountain paths, there are options for all levels and preferences. One of the easiest routes is the one that connects the seafront promenade of the capital with Los Cancajos. It’s a 4 km coastal walk that passes through Playa de Bajamar and continues through the “cuartel” area until reaching the beaches of Los Cancajos.
