El Llano de Las Cuevas, located behind the visitor center of Caldera de Taburiente, is an ideal place to enjoy the bucolic landscape of El Paso, recently restored. This rural environment stands out for its unique features, such as stone pyramids and walls, as well as typical farm animals like cows and horses.

Exploring the rural surroundings of Llano de Las Cuevas
Along the route, you will also find informational signs explaining the landscape, and in the background, you can admire the imposing Caldera de Taburiente, hopefully accompanied by the magical “fall of clouds”.
The trail combines dirt paths and paved sections, offering easy and relaxing routes, perfect for children or those not used to long hikes. These routes can be enjoyed all year round, but winter and spring are particularly recommended, as the almond blossoms and other typical flowers fill the landscape with color and beauty.
The circular trail starts behind the visitor center and invites you to immerse yourself in the rural surroundings. During the hike, you will be accompanied by volcanic stone walls and the sound of birds (this area is also important in La Palma for birdwatching). In addition, you can see the traditional stone pyramids, which in the past were used for storing and drying products such as prickly pears, figs, and grapes.
When you reach a section of paved road, you have two options to continue:
Path to Virgen del Pino
Follow the paved road for 1 km more until you reach Virgen del Pino, a slightly uphill section, but well worth the effort. Within the PR LP 1.1 trail, you will find the Hacienda del Pino, a perfect place to rest. It has at least three tables and two additional benches, as well as a small outdoor library in a closed cabinet, ideal for relaxing and enjoying the scenery.
Path to LP1 (El Abrigado)
Continue along the dirt trail a few meters further towards LP1 (El Abrigado). Along this section, you can admire a protea plantation, particularly beautiful if in bloom. Finally, you will reach the main road, which will take you back to the visitor center parking lot.

This simple yet charming route allows you to enjoy the tranquility of El Paso’s rural surroundings, offering a perfect mix of nature, history, and scenic beauty.
