In the rural heart of El Paso, the Llano de las Cuevas Trail combines volcanic scenery, ancient traditions and the serene sounds of the countryside.
Located just behind the Caldera de Taburiente Visitor Centre, it’s ideal for families, beginners, or anyone looking for a peaceful walk surrounded by nature and tradition.
Recently restored, the trail passes through farmland, past farm animals, and offers spectacular views of the Caldera de Taburiente and, if you’re lucky, its magical waterfall of clouds.
It’s beautiful all year round, but especially in winter and spring, when almond trees in bloom paint the landscape in white and pink.

The Route Step by Step
The trail starts behind the Caldera de Taburiente Visitor Centre, where you can park your car or arrive by bus no. 300.
The first part takes you through a bucolic agricultural landscape, where you’ll see old stone pyramids once used for drying figs, prickly pears or grapes, while enjoying birdsong, perfect for birdwatching lovers.
Halfway along, the path reaches a paved road, and here you can choose between two directions:
- Towards Virgen del Pino: Follow the asphalt road 1 km uphill to the small chapel of Virgen del Pino, a peaceful spot with tables, benches and even a small outdoor library.
It’s the perfect place to rest and soak up the traditional atmosphere of El Paso. - Towards El Abrigado (LP-1): Return to the dirt trail a few metres ahead, heading towards the LP-1 road.
On this section, you’ll pass a colourful protea plantation, especially beautiful when in bloom, before returning to the visitor centre.
In both cases, you’ll finish at the same starting point, after a calm, refreshing walk filled with nature and rural charm.

- Comfortable footwear: Although easy, some parts have dirt and volcanic stones.
- Camera ready: The views of the Caldera and stone pyramids are picture-perfect.
- Best time: Early morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer and the air fresher.
