Roque de Los Muchachos Visitor Center

The Roque de los Muchachos Visitor Center, perched at an altitude of 2426 meters, is set amidst a unique scenic backdrop, offering prime astronomical viewing conditions on La Palma Island. Opened in December 2021, it’s designed to cater to both adults and children, including those with limited mobility. Its primary aim is to highlight the significance of astronomy on the island, thereby promoting La Palma’s natural and cultural heritage from its highest point.

This venture became possible thanks to collaborations from various entities, such as the Cabildo de La Palma, the Town Hall of the Villa de Garafía, and the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics “I.A.C.” Notably, in close proximity to this center, stands one of the world’s leading Astrophysics observatories.

The Visitor Center features multiple rooms. The Welcome Room houses the reception, an auditorium, a store, and an interactive table with “touch menus” that delve into the world of the telescopes at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. Furthermore, there are rooms where visitors can understand why the Canary Archipelago was strategically chosen to host the world’s most prominent telescopes and immerse themselves in the vastness of the cosmos, exploring every facet of science and our Universe.

Lastly, in Room 3, one can get acquainted with the municipality of the Villa de Garafía, which hosts the Visitor Center. Here, guests can learn about its traditions, way of life, and rich natural and cultural heritage. In essence, the Visitor Center is a unique venue that brings us closer to the captivating world of Astronomy and underscores its significance on La Palma Island.
