Every May, the island of La Palma, also known as La Isla Bonita, hosts one of the toughest ultratrail races in the world, the Transvulcania La Palma. Covering 73 km with a positive elevation gain of 4,600 m and a descent of 4,300 m, it is a true test of endurance, strength and willpower.

This is one of the most coveted marathons for its difficulty and stunning natural scenery. La Palma’s volcanic terrain offers runners an extreme experience among lava fields, rocky ridges, pine forests and dramatic elevation changes, under rapidly shifting weather conditions. A true adventure for athletes from all over the world.
There are four main race categories, each with its own distance and level of difficulty:
- Ultra
The main and longest race: 73 km, with +4,350 m ascent and -4,057 m descent.
Starting at the Fuencaliente Lighthouse, the course climbs all the way up to Roque de Los Muchachos (2,426 m), the highest point on the island, before descending steeply through Tazacorte to reach the finish line in Los Llanos de Aridane.
- Marathon
Distance: 43.2 km
Elevation gain: +1,884 m / loss: –3,320 m
Starting point: Refugio del Pilar
Finish line: Puerto de Tazacorte
A demanding yet spectacular route that combines forest trails, volcanic ridges and panoramic sea views.
- Half Marathon
Distance: 24.8 km, with +2,097 m ascent and –689 m descent.
Starting from Fuencaliente Lighthouse, runners climb steadily through volcanic terrain to reach Refugio del Pilar — a shorter, yet equally beautiful and challenging experience.
- Vertical Kilometer
Distance: 7.26 km, from Puerto de Tazacorte to the Mirador del Time, with a total ascent of 1,203 m.
A steep, fast and spectacular climb offering incredible views of the Aridane Valley and the ocean.
