El Pilar is not just a recreation area, it is also the starting point of the famous Ruta de los Volcanes: a spectacular hiking route that crosses ridges, craters and unique lunar landscapes all the way to the south of the island.

Just next to the Visitor Center, you’ll find a self-guided circular trail ideal for families. The path is well marked and dotted with educational panels that enrich the walk.

  • Distance: 1.5 km
  • Duration: about 60 minutes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Start/End: El Pilar Visitor Center

The route takes you through pine forests, lava flows and volcanic cones that tell the geological story of the island. The highlight is a hidden volcanic cone, a magical spot that feels frozen in time.

This walk is more than just a stroll, it’s an opportunity to learn while enjoying, as the panels explain how the terrain was formed, which species live here and how volcanoes shape La Palma’s identity.

Thanks to its altitude and lack of light pollution, El Pilar is an excellent spot for stargazing. Close by is the Llano del Jable viewpoint, the perfect place to enjoy unforgettable sunsets or an evening of astrotourism.

  • Bring a jacket or windbreaker: it can get cool, even in summer.
  • Request permits in advance if you plan to camp or use the barbecues.
  • Always follow the authorities’ instructions in case of weather alerts.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: paths are wide but made of volcanic soil.
